Please read about the importance of the 2020 Census and then take the time to complete your questionnaire today →

Filling out the 2020 Census is not only essential, but easy.

It's #CensusDay, Pat.

By now, you should have received an invitation by mail to fill out the 2020 U.S. Census. In case you hadn't gotten a chance yet to complete your form, I wanted to reach out to explain why it's so important every American do so.

Map of the U.S.

First, a little background on the U.S. Census: The census is a constitutionally mandated questionnaire that counts the population of the United States and five U.S. territories every ten years. A complete and accurate count is critical because the data will be used to figure out two very important things:

Representation: Census data affect how many seats a state holds in the U.S. House of Representatives and how congressional districts are redrawn.

Federal funding: The results of the 2020 Census will inform how more than $675 billion in federal funding is allocated across the country for things like hospitals, school lunch initiatives, highways, and other essential programs.

If you're ready to get started, visit 2020census.gov to make sure you're counted today. There's also information there on how to complete the census by phone or by mail.

If you have concerns, maybe you'll find these three final points convincing:

  • For non-English speakers (or for folks whose first language is something other than English), the U.S. Census Bureau offers guides in 59 languages.

  • You may have heard stories that the Trump administration was fighting to put a question about people's U.S. citizenship status on the census. That was blocked by the U.S. Supreme Court and is not included in the questionnaire -- remember, the goal is to make sure every person is counted.

  • All answers you provide are kept confidential. They cannot be used against you by any government agency or court.

Thank you for taking the time to read a little about the importance of the 2020 Census. As you can see, making sure everyone fills out the census isn't just our duty as Americans, but key to building the world we're fighting for as Democrats -- one of equity where every voice is heard.

Together,

Tom
