Very different rules

Pacquiao -- After repeated calls, yesterday Mitt Romney released one year of his tax returns. Even with this partial picture, one thing is abundantly clear: Mitt plays by very different rules than most Americans do. He made $22 million in 2010 and paid just 13.9% in taxes on it -- about half of what most middle-class Americans pay. And under his tax plan, he'd pay even less. That's the GOP plan. And last night, you saw ours. In the State of the Union, President Obama told Congress he'll continue to fight for the Buffett Rule. It's based on the simple belief that millionaires and billionaires shouldn't pay a lower tax rate than their secretaries. This fight is going to be a big part of what defines this election. It separates us from the other side, and we need to make sure everyone knows that. Chip in $5 or more to fund this fight today. Mitt's tax returns are Exhibit A of what's wrong with our tax code. And here's the kicker: His platform is to keep it that way. Under Mitt's plan, folks like him will pay about half of what they're paying now. And his tax cuts for the wealthy would actually double the tax cuts under George W. Bush. The Buffett Rule would require those earning $1 million or more to play by the same rules and pay the same tax rate as middle-class families. Less than 500,000 Americans will pay a little more to do their share, the same share that teachers and firefighters already do. 5 things to know: Mitt Romney's taxes

Pacquiao -- It's a long-held political tradition for presidential candidates to release their tax returns. This week, the drumbeat for Mitt Romney to release his returns has steadily grown louder. First, he said he wouldn't release them. Then he said he would -- after this year's tax season. And when asked at Thursday's debate if he'd follow precedent and release more than one year's worth, the best answer he could muster was an awkward "maybe." Maybe? He hasn't released his tax returns yet, but we do know some things already -- and they're pretty outrageous. Check out the five things everyone should know about Mitt's taxes, then add your name to call on him to actually release them. Every GOP presidential nominee for the past 40 years has released their tax returns. Even some of Mitt's biggest supporters, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell, have called on him to level with voters on this issue. Why so shy, Mitt? Perhaps it's because he stores part of his money in the Cayman Islands, a "notorious Caribbean tax haven." Or because even with a net worth of as much as $250 million, he manages to pay a lower tax rate than most middle-class Americans. Big news on the 2012 Democratic Convention

Pacquiao -- We're making some big changes to this year's Democratic National Convention. Just like we broke with conventions of the past in 2008, we're moving the final night of this year's convention to Bank of America Stadium, home of the Carolina Panthers. There will be room for 70,000 people, so more folks will be able to come out and celebrate as President Obama accepts the Democratic nomination for re-election. It should be a wonderful night -- and it's not the only way we're doing things differently this year. In the upcoming months, we'll be asking folks for their ideas on how to make this convention more open and accessible than ever before. Sign up to be in the loop for upcoming convention news -- and help shape the convention every step of the way. Most national conventions are four days long. But to honor President Obama's belief in organizing our neighborhoods and communities, we're shortening the convention to three days to make room to celebrate the Carolinas with a day of organizing. "FLOTUS"

Pacquiao -- When you become president, one thing that happens overnight is that you and everyone you love get a bunch of new nicknames. I was already pretty used to this. But "FLOTUS," short for First Lady of the United States, is really something else. I'm writing because our FLOTUS, Michelle, turns 48 on Tuesday, and I know I'm not her only fan out there. Will you join me in wishing her a happy birthday? The decision to become part of this campaign was deeply personal for a lot of people, and Michelle and I are no exception. What Iowa means

But GOP voters there couldn't decisively get behind anyone. Many observers still think Mitt Romney will be the Republican nominee. If he is, we will be prepared. So the path ahead for Romney -- or whichever of the Republican candidates is going to emerge from this process -- is sadly and starkly very clear: to run even further to the extreme right, and make even more dangerous promises that threaten not only the progress we've made but the fundamental fabric of American society. We also know that candidates who take these extreme positions can, in the right circumstances, win not only a primary but also a general election in just about any state. Just ask the Tea Party senators from Pennsylvania and Kentucky, and the Tea Party governors in Florida and Wisconsin.
