Gabby

Pacquiao --

Yesterday, my close friend and fellow Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords resigned from Congress to continue her recovery.

I went with her to the floor of the House to serve as her voice -- and to thank her for her service to this country.

Join me in thanking her by adding your name and a note, and I'll make sure she gets them.

Gabby made one thing very clear with these words:

"I will recover and will return, and we will work together again, for Arizona, and for all Americans."

I know she is going to be back. Until then, let's show her we're all behind her:

Very different rules

Democrats
Pacquiao --

After repeated calls, yesterday Mitt Romney released one year of his tax returns.

Even with this partial picture, one thing is abundantly clear: Mitt plays by very different rules than most Americans do.

He made $22 million in 2010 and paid just 13.9% in taxes on it -- about half of what most middle-class Americans pay. And under his tax plan, he'd pay even less.

That's the GOP plan. And last night, you saw ours.

In the State of the Union, President Obama told Congress he'll continue to fight for the Buffett Rule. It's based on the simple belief that millionaires and billionaires shouldn't pay a lower tax rate than their secretaries.

This fight is going to be a big part of what defines this election. It separates us from the other side, and we need to make sure everyone knows that.

Chip in $5 or more to fund this fight today.

Mitt's tax returns are Exhibit A of what's wrong with our tax code. And here's the kicker: His platform is to keep it that way.

Under Mitt's plan, folks like him will pay about half of what they're paying now. And his tax cuts for the wealthy would actually double the tax cuts under George W. Bush.

The Buffett Rule would require those earning $1 million or more to play by the same rules and pay the same tax rate as middle-class families. Less than 500,000 Americans will pay a little more to do their share, the same share that teachers and firefighters already do.

Last night, we saw our President make the case for a country where we all pitch in our fair share.

Help make sure he can wage that fight until it happens. Chip in $5 or more today:

5 things to know: Mitt Romney's taxes

Democrats
Pacquiao --

It's a long-held political tradition for presidential candidates to release their tax returns.

This week, the drumbeat for Mitt Romney to release his returns has steadily grown louder. First, he said he wouldn't release them. Then he said he would -- after this year's tax season. And when asked at Thursday's debate if he'd follow precedent and release more than one year's worth, the best answer he could muster was an awkward "maybe."

Maybe?

He hasn't released his tax returns yet, but we do know some things already -- and they're pretty outrageous.

Check out the five things everyone should know about Mitt's taxes, then add your name to call on him to actually release them.

Every GOP presidential nominee for the past 40 years has released their tax returns. Even some of Mitt's biggest supporters, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell, have called on him to level with voters on this issue.

Why so shy, Mitt?

Perhaps it's because he stores part of his money in the Cayman Islands, a "notorious Caribbean tax haven." Or because even with a net worth of as much as $250 million, he manages to pay a lower tax rate than most middle-class Americans. Maybe it's that when he says he's "unemployed, too," he forgets to tell you he's been making millions off his Bain investments at the same time.

We think voters should know the whole story.

So take a look at the top five things we know already, then sign on to make sure we find out the rest:

You're invited: State of the Union watch parties

Pacquiao --

President Obama's annual State of the Union is this Tuesday -- are you planning to watch? If so, I wanted to make sure you saw this email from Obama for America Field Director Jeremy Bird.

The Obama campaign is holding watch parties all over the country -- thousands of them, actually -- and you're invited. Besides watching the President's speech, folks will be planning their local organizing for the months ahead to make sure the President and Democrats up and down the ticket win in November.

So see if there's a watch party near you -- then RSVP if you can make it:

Thanks,

Patrick

Subject: This Tuesday: Watch the State of the Union

Friend --

President Obama will give his State of the Union address on Tuesday, January 24th -- his last before the 2012 election.

Don't watch it alone. If you've been waiting for the right moment to get involved in the campaign, this is it. In your hometown, folks who support the President will be coming together to watch the address and talk about the agenda he lays out -- then plan out how to organize locally in the coming months to spread the President's message and keep growing this campaign.

Can you make it to the party in your town this Tuesday?

Here are the details:

What: State of the Union watch party

RSVP now

There's not just a party in your town -- there will be thousands of these parties all across the country where supporters will connect with one another and step up the work where they live.

This year ahead of us is going to be a big one -- and in what I promise will seem like no time at all, it will be November. What we can accomplish between now and then depends on how well we grow this organization. And it's going to take all of us working together.

On Tuesday, folks in thousands of neighborhoods are meeting up to do just that.

As the President is setting the agenda for the direction he hopes to take our country -- and the Republicans draw closer to choosing a nominee -- it's on all of us to take our local organizing to the next level.

RSVP for the watch party on Tuesday and step up now in your town:

Big news on the 2012 Democratic Convention

Democrats
Pacquiao --

We're making some big changes to this year's Democratic National Convention.

Just like we broke with conventions of the past in 2008, we're moving the final night of this year's convention to Bank of America Stadium, home of the Carolina Panthers. There will be room for 70,000 people, so more folks will be able to come out and celebrate as President Obama accepts the Democratic nomination for re-election.

It should be a wonderful night -- and it's not the only way we're doing things differently this year. In the upcoming months, we'll be asking folks for their ideas on how to make this convention more open and accessible than ever before.

Sign up to be in the loop for upcoming convention news -- and help shape the convention every step of the way.

Most national conventions are four days long. But to honor President Obama's belief in organizing our neighborhoods and communities, we're shortening the convention to three days to make room to celebrate the Carolinas with a day of organizing.

To kick off the convention, we'll be getting together at the Charlotte Motor Speedway on Labor Day to organize and get ready for November. It's a way to build our organization -- and help ramp up our efforts in battleground states like North Carolina, which President Obama won by just 14,000 votes in 2008.

These are just a few ways we're working to make this convention about more than political traditions and confetti falling from the rafters. We're asking people to share their ideas, planning activities that reflect the core of our organizing work, and asking anyone who wants to be a part of it to take ownership.

Make sure your voice is heard as we continue to plan the convention over the months ahead.

Stay connected with the latest in convention news and ways to get involved today:

"FLOTUS"

Pacquiao --

When you become president, one thing that happens overnight is that you and everyone you love get a bunch of new nicknames.

I was already pretty used to this. But "FLOTUS," short for First Lady of the United States, is really something else.

I'm writing because our FLOTUS, Michelle, turns 48 on Tuesday, and I know I'm not her only fan out there.

Will you join me in wishing her a happy birthday?

The decision to become part of this campaign was deeply personal for a lot of people, and Michelle and I are no exception. But we both knew, like anyone else who believes in what we're trying to do here, that this was never going to be easy.

This fall, Michelle and I will have been married 20 years. The next 10 months will be harder than any we've experienced together, and I couldn't do it without her. I know she'd love to hear from you today:

http://my.democrats.org/For-Michelle

Thanks for your support,

Barack

P.S. -- This weekend, people are getting together to volunteer in their communities in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Find out how you can join in at serve.gov.

What Iowa means

Democrats
Pacquiao --

Just wanted to make sure you saw this email from Obama campaign manager Jim Messina.

He lays out what last night's outcome in Iowa means for the 10 months to come: No matter who wins the Republican nomination, they're going to be running on a Tea Party platform. And when they do, they'll be backed by a barrage of negative ads funded by outside groups -- like the super PACs who already plunked down nearly $13 million into the Iowa caucus alone.

We're fighting back by out-organizing the GOP on the ground.

If you want to be a part of that, sign up to volunteer for the 2012 campaign here:

http://my.democrats.org/After-Iowa

Thanks,

Patrick

-------------ORIGINAL MESSAGE-------------
From: Jim Messina, BarackObama.com
Subject: This is not a joke

Friend --

These Republican candidates spent in some cases more than a year -- in Mitt Romney's case seven years -- campaigning in Iowa to be the next president.

But GOP voters there couldn't decisively get behind anyone.

Who exactly leads the Republican race going forward isn't clear, but we do know two things:

1) The extremist Tea Party agenda won a clear victory. No matter who the Republicans nominate, we'll be running against someone who has embraced that agenda in order to win -- vowing to let Wall Street write its own rules, end Medicare as we know it, roll back gay rights, leave the troops in Iraq indefinitely, restrict a woman's right to choose, and gut Social Security to pay for more tax cuts for millionaires and corporations.

2) We'll be facing an onslaught of unprecedented spending from outside groups funded by corporations and anonymous donors. In Iowa alone, so-called "super PACs" spent $12.9 million on almost exclusively negative ads. These groups will turn their fire even more directly on us in the weeks ahead to prove that their candidate is the most anti-Obama.

This race is officially on -- and if we want to win, the only way is to out-organize them on the ground.

Sign up to volunteer your time now, and one of our organizers in your community will give you a call by the end of next week to talk about how you can help.

Many observers still think Mitt Romney will be the Republican nominee. If he is, we will be prepared. But it's curious that no one can really explain how, when or why the 70-plus percent of Republicans saying in polls and in Iowa that Mitt Romney's not their candidate will suddenly come around.

So the path ahead for Romney -- or whichever of the Republican candidates is going to emerge from this process -- is sadly and starkly very clear: to run even further to the extreme right, and make even more dangerous promises that threaten not only the progress we've made but the fundamental fabric of American society.

We also know that candidates who take these extreme positions can, in the right circumstances, win not only a primary but also a general election in just about any state.

Just ask the Tea Party senators from Pennsylvania and Kentucky, and the Tea Party governors in Florida and Wisconsin.

Watching the circus on TV, it's tempting to think it's almost funny -- but this is not a joke.

We've got to be ready.

What you decide to do next will determine which kind of politics wins this election:

More soon.
