I'm running for the U.S. Senate because Mississippi is changing. I know that my state is ready to elect leaders who will represent all Americans. We're putting up a historic, grassroots fight to win this Senate seat -- and our latest poll has our campaign within five points of the lead.
I'm coming to you today because I need you to join our grassroots fight, too, Pat.
I know it won't be easy. Growing up in Mississippi, I remember Jim Crow. My twin sister and I were some of the first Black students to integrate Yazoo City High School. We were 18 among 800. When the school refused to hire Black teachers, I helped organize a walk-out. I faced harassment every single day from students and teachers -- teachers!
But despite Mississippi's troubled past, I love our state and am a proud lifelong Mississippian. I have spent my entire life fighting to move our state forward. Change has often been slow, but Mississippi is changing. I've seen it within my own lifetime: From when I was elected Mississippi's first Black congressman since the Reconstruction Era, to when I served as the first Black U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, to when Mississippians came together earlier this summer to remove our Confederate state flag.
I am coming to you now, with fewer than three months left in this election, because Mississippians are done being held back. We are ready to push forward -- as I have always tried to do -- toward the more just, more fair, more united Mississippi I know we can become. This seat is a crucial pickup opportunity for a Democratic Senate, and I know we can win if we stay focused and work together. But time is running out to win this race, so I'm asking for your support today:
Will you split a $10 contribution between my campaign for Senate and the Democratic Party? So many Democratic candidates in tough, competitive races -- including me -- are counting on your support while there's still enough time to make a difference.
One thing I know for certain is that Mississippi cannot move forward with our current leadership -- and our country can't move forward as long as Mitch McConnell maintains his chokehold on our politics. That's true even if Joe Biden wins the Oval Office. Both of those reasons are why we must do everything we can flip the Senate and invest in states like Mississippi, Pat. Our nation's future depends on it.
My Republican opponent is hurting Mississippi. She wants to "put the brakes on" coronavirus relief. She openly jokes about public hangings and voter suppression.
We can't bring good jobs and a brighter future to Mississippi with a sitting senator acting like that, and it is up to us -- and I mean all of us -- to make sure that we can flip this seat and help Democrats up and down the ballot win back our country for the working people who need it most.
Please donate $10 -- or whatever makes sense for your budget right now -- to be split between my campaign for Senate and the DNC. This is a tough race that I can't win without you, Pat. But together we can flip this seat, flip the Senate, and move our nation forward.
Yours in the fight,
Mike

U.S. Senate candidate, Mississippi
P.S. I'm no stranger to a hard-fought battle, Pat. I've been fighting them -- and winning -- for my entire life. I know that we can build the people-powered campaign it will take to win this race, but we don't have a moment to delay. If you can, please split a $10 donation between my race for Senate and the Democratic Party.
