By now you may have heard that yesterday the Supreme Court ruled in a 5-4 decision that the Republican secretary of state in Ohio can purge eligible voters from voter rolls who haven't voted in two years. Let me explain how this decision affects 2018, 2020, and future elections: This ruling will embolden Republicans to remove millions more people from voter rolls across the country -- so we have to be laser-focused on voter registration this cycle. That means putting more organizers on the ground, working twice as hard to reach every single voter -- especially in communities of color -- and ramping up our efforts to educate millions of voters nationwide. Campaigns and state parties are already working overtime to reach people before voter registration deadlines close -- and they need our help right now. Can I count on you to contribute $10 right now to help Democrats ramp up voter registration efforts across the country this cycle and beyond? This is the only way to ensure that millions of eligible voters across the country can cast a vote this year. Pat, protecting voting rights isn't just a messaging point -- it is a principle Democrats have worked and fought to expand for decades. Republicans have been trying to disenfranchise voters for just as long. Now that the Supreme Court has granted Ohio legal grounds for voter suppression, other states will certainly attempt to follow up. It's quite literally up to us to make sure millions of people stay on voter rolls in the midterms and make it to the polls. So, I'm asking: Stand with Democrats and make a $10 contribution right now to help campaigns and state parties ramp up their voter registration efforts. Any amount you can contribute will go a long way in protecting voters this cycle and beyond. Thanks for stepping up today, Georgina Georgina Cannan Deputy Director and Counsel, Civic Engagement and Voter Protection Democratic National Committee P.S. Let me be perfectly clear about this: If we don't stand up for voting rights, we won't win elections. It's time for Democrats to fight back against the GOP's voter suppression tactics -- donate $10 right now to help register more voters. |
