I've been involved in public life since I came home to fight to stop Richard Nixon's war in Vietnam -- and I have never seen an American president do anything remotely like what Donald Trump did this month. Trump stood beside Russian President Vladimir Putin and failed to defend our democracy -- and failed even to defend the truth about Russia's attack on our elections. It was the most disgraceful, remarkable moment of kowtowing to a foreign leader that our country has ever witnessed. Trump's actions send a message to Putin and the rest of the world that the president of the United States won't stand up to a foreign adversary. We cannot treat this as business as usual, Pat. Trump and Republicans who stand by him are actively putting our country in danger. We must defend our democracy, and we must do it now -- and the best way to do that is by electing Democrats who will stand up to Trump. I am asking you directly, Pat. Will you contribute $3 to stand with Democrats before tonight's critical FEC deadline? We must do everything humanly possible to defend our democracy and our values, and that starts with electing leaders who will take the threat of Russia seriously. President Trump can say "would" meant "wouldn't" and he can distort his actions all he wants, but don't buy it. When he enables Putin's spin about the attack on America, he opens the door for it to happen again. It's reckless -- and it's put our democracy at risk. This is a grave and important time in our nation's history. What we are able to do right now to elect Democrats nationwide will determine the security of our country for our children and the foundation of our democracy for generations to come.
