Two years ago at the Democratic National Convention, I stood proudly alongside my wife Ghazala as a patriotic American Muslim with undivided loyalty to our country. Our story is the story of many immigrants: We came to America with next to nothing and worked hard to provide for our three sons, allowing them to grow up in a country where they were free to follow their dreams. We came here because we believed in American democracy. Right now, our democracy is at risk. We have a president who would rather side with Russia than protect the country he took a sacred oath to serve -- which is why we can't take November's elections lightly, Pat. Tuesday is a critical monthly fundraising deadline for the Democratic Party. I am grateful that my family and I have enjoyed America's blessings. But Donald Trump does not believe that hardworking immigrant families who look or worship like mine even belong in America. Trump questions the patriotism of American Muslims like my son -- U.S. Army Captain Humayun Khan -- who sacrificed his life for this country. Since taking office, Trump has shown time and time again that he does not understand the meaning of the word patriotism. If this president were a true patriot, he would put his country before his own interests. Trump has shown us exactly what he stands for: attacking people because of where they were born or how they worship, favoring the wealthy over working families, and putting his own political gain over what's best for our nation. Right now, it is our patriotic duty to fight back against his dangerous policies. Democrats have a chance to put a check on Trump this year -- but that will only happen if we win elections in November.
