Trump's nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court is the most serious threat we've faced to women's health in decades. Make no mistake, Pat: If Republicans get their way, a woman's ability to make her own health care decisions will no doubt suffer tremendously. Roe v. Wade is the only thing standing in the way of Republican-controlled states across the country criminalizing abortion, and it's going to take all of us standing up and fighting back to defend a woman's fundamental and constitutional right to choose. What people like you and me do in this moment could determine the status of women's reproductive rights for generations to come. Take a stand right now by chipping in $3 to support Democratic candidates who will fight relentlessly to protect a woman's right to make her own health care decisions. I've seen firsthand just how far Republican lawmakers will go to undermine a woman's right to abortion. Five years ago in the Texas State Senate, I led a 13-hour filibuster to oppose legislation designed to significantly limit abortion access across the state. My Democratic colleagues and I were able to run out the clock that night alongside one of the most powerful protests I've ever seen. But days later, the governor chose the low road of partisanship over the common good by calling an emergency session which led to the passage of the bill, resulting in the closure of more than half of our clinics and the inaccessibility of reproductive care for women across the state. They will stop at nothing, Pat -- and now Trump wants to use the Supreme Court to sabotage women's reproductive rights. In 2016, it was Justice Kennedy who provided a crucial vote in the landmark case Whole Woman's Health v. Hellerstedt that struck down Texas' restrictive abortion laws, which had been replicated in other states across the country. By nominating Brett Kavanaugh as Kennedy's replacement, Trump is jeopardizing abortion access -- or worse yet, threatening to criminalize abortion. The decision to receive an abortion is the most personal and private decision that a woman makes in her life. I know because I've made that choice myself -- but the choice was mine. I made it guided by my faith, my family, and my doctor. I can't imagine a lawmaker making that decision for me. Now is the time to show up for abortion rights, for each other, for ourselves, for women we know, and for women we will never personally know. Now more than ever, we must support Democratic candidates across the country who will fight to defend women's health and rights. Show Trump and Republicans that they will NOT get away with rolling back the right to choose by chipping in $3 right now. Defending abortion rights -- especially at this critical time -- is a fight that requires us to stay vigilant. We'll need to work twice as hard and twice as smart to continue advancing equality for women in this increasingly hostile environment. I'm up for the challenge. I know you are too. In solidarity, Wendy Wendy Davis Former State Senator, Texas P.S. What we do in this moment is crucial, Pat. It'll take all of us standing up and raising our voices to defend a woman's right to make her own health care decisions. Chip in $3 today to show your commitment to this fight. |
