When I was a little girl of 16, watching Barbara Jordan speak to the 1976 Democratic Convention, I said to myself, her hair is nappy and her skin is dark -- and she is a part of the party that looks like me. Seeing her on TV, on that stage mattered to me. Hearing the values she spoke about cheered on by the Democratic Party mattered. And I've been thinking about that moment a lot lately, as my term as DNC Chair comes to a close -- because this work we do, and this party we love, matters to too many people for me to ever think my job is through. That's why I'm asking you -- one final time as Chair -- to help Democrats do the work that means so much to so many. There are some folks out there who want to count us out, who will tell you that the Democratic Party doesn't matter. Don't you dare listen to them. You ask a DREAMer if we matter. You ask an environmentalist if we matter. You ask a Muslim if we matter. You ask that little black girl running around with her eight siblings in Kenner, Louisiana with the dream of giving Americans all across the country representation and change they could believe in -- you're damn right this party matters! So before we go ahead and elect our new Chair (and before I head home for Mardi Gras to shake my tail feather down Bourbon Street with the band), I need you to pitch in $3 or whatever you can today to show that you will continue to fight with this party as we fight for the things that matter.
