Add your name if you're ready to fight to protect the right to vote: I'm doing my best not to react to every little thing Donald Trump tweets. But his tweets this morning -- announcing a "major investigation" into supposed voter fraud based on his absurd belief that he lost the popular vote because as many as 5 million people illegally voted in November -- are a real cause for alarm. This is a call to action for all of us who believe in safeguarding our most fundamental right: the right to vote. Because if Trump were serious about this investigation, he'd just turn up what we already know -- real, in-person voter fraud is virtually non-existent. You're more likely to get struck by lightning than find someone who illegally cast a ballot. But this isn't a legitimate investigation. It's a pretext for a major crackdown on voting rights. In the years since the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act, as Republicans have won governorships and gained power in state legislatures, they've put in place restrictions that make it harder to vote -- eliminating same-day registration, strict voter ID laws, drastic cuts to voting hours and locations, and the like. We already suspected that Trump was going to try and do the same thing on a national level. Immediately after Election Day, he was taking advice from Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, the architect of several states' harsh voting restrictions. His choice of Attorney General, Jeff Sessions, has bought into Trump's illegal voting conspiracy and is a long-time opponent of the Voting Rights Act. And now this. It's no coincidence that a week after John Lewis called Donald Trump illegitimate, after the lowest approval ratings for a newly-inaugurated president in recent memory, after millions marched around the world to protest his regressive agenda, Trump has resurrected unfounded claims of voter fraud as justification for suppressing the vote. The right to vote is the most important right in our democracy -- it is how we defend all other rights and how we hold our elected officials accountable. And Donald Trump is coming for it. So we need to be more resolved than ever to defend our access to the ballot box. Democrats are ready to go to the mat to protect the right to vote.
