A bad omen:

DemocratsJoin us.
Well, Republicans have finally elected a new Speaker of the House -- he's a guy you might remember from the 2012 election: Paul Ryan.

And the new House leader is already leaving very little room for optimism. Before taking the job, Ryan signed off on a letter from the House Freedom Caucus -- the conservative fringe of Congressional Republicans -- to promise that he wouldn't bring any immigration bill to the House floor "so long as Barack Obama is president."

The fact that Speaker Ryan is beginning his tenure with backroom deals isn't exactly a good omen -- but beyond setting the stage for his leadership style, it also highlights the urgency of our mission to elect Democrats up and down the ticket in 2016.

We can make Paul Ryan's speakership a short one -- but only if we work together. If you're ready to make sure a Democrat is the House Speaker in 2017, add your name right now:

Thanks for stepping up today.

All the best,
