Friend -- I had my first mammogram at age 40. Three months later, I discovered a lump in my breast during a self-exam. It was cancer. Fortunately, we caught it early and, thanks to aggressive treatment, I have had a clean bill of health for seven years and counting. After living through breast cancer, one principle has become an absolute imperative for me: Every woman has the right to take charge of her own health and do what's best for her. That is why I truly believe the bill to defund Planned Parenthood passed last week by my Republican colleagues is the most dangerous piece of legislation for women's health this Congress has seen. As a woman, mother, and cancer survivor, I refuse to take the Republican threat to shut down the government over Planned Parenthood funding lying down -- and neither should you. Planned Parenthood provides nearly half a million breast exams annually, including screenings to nearly 88,000 women whose cancer was detected early. They also provide almost 400,000 Pap tests, a critical service in screening for cervical cancer. That's not to mention the family planning services, medical tests and treatments, pregnancy tests -- and yes, abortions (only 3 percent of the services they offer, but an important, necessary, and let's not forget, legal one). All in all, 2.7 million Americans -- 78 percent of whom live at or below 150% of the poverty level -- receive critical health services from their local Planned Parenthood each year. As Democrats, we are working every day to make sure that women are treated as equals, with dignity and respect. If you're as outraged as I am by these Republican attacks, pitch in $3 or more. If you've saved your payment information, your donation will go through immediately. QUICK DONATE: $3 QUICK DONATE: $10 QUICK DONATE: $25 QUICK DONATE: $50 QUICK DONATE: $100 Or donate another amount: https://my.democrats.org/September-Deadline Enough is enough with these Republicans willing to risk women's lives for political points.
