That GOP debate was a nightmare

Friend --

Here's how our small-d, democratic system works: We listen to the conversation, we speak, and then we work together to figure out what's best for the country -- right? So Wednesday night, when the GOP hosted its second debate, I listened carefully to what they had to say. I hope you did, too.

As Democrats build toward 2016, it's important we know exactly what Republicans are putting on the record when they talk to their supporters. Because, yes, they make a spectacle of themselves every time they debate -- but, more importantly, they energize their base when they make these asinine statements. Paying attention right now helps us hold them accountable when their nominee (inevitably) tries to flip his or her message later on in the election. And debates like Wednesday's are the best way for us to hear them all at once.

Candidates like Donald Trump, Marco Rubio, and Jeb Bush said things that have been prime water cooler conversation for us, sure. But the reality is this: Presidents aren't elected to entertain us -- they're elected to lead, and the Republicans want to lead this country off a cliff. They were tripping all over themselves Wednesday night, trying to out-flank each other on the right. They want to ban all funding for contraception, period. They want to trash the 14th Amendment to deny citizenship to children born here in America. They want to cut taxes for the rich. And several of them even want to re-invade Iraq.

So shock value aside, the stuff these Republicans said (and will keep saying) doesn't exactly represent meaningful progress for hardworking families. And we have to hold their feet to the fire for that -- and that effort will require all of us, working together.

So, if you're ready to do your part, then chip in $10 or more so we can help Democrats keep the White House and take back Congress in 2016.
