As recently as last week, Democrats were the clear underdog in the special election to fill the seat of an Arizona Republican who had to resign in disgrace earlier this year. Stop me if this sounds familiar: The election is to replace a long-tenured Republican congressman, Democrats haven't won in the district in decades, Trump won in 2016 by over 20 points, and Republicans are outspending Democrats to shore up their margins in the district. But a funny thing is happening with this race -- Dr. Hiral Tipirneni, the Democratic candidate, has been campaigning hard under the radar for the past couple months. She's sneaking up on the Republican candidate, and a poll out today has them locked in a dead heat. Hiral can win this race -- she's run a good campaign and she's given herself a shot to win.
