I was first elected to serve in the U.S. Senate when I was a 29-year-old kid, and over the years, I've been part of some monumental fights that go to the core of who we are as a country. From expanding access to health care for millions of Americans to laying the foundation for an economy that works for the middle class to standing up for marriage equality -- I know that the vast majority of Americans are always ahead of their elected officials. Ending gun violence is one of them. I led the fight on this in the 1990s when we enacted sensible background checks and banned assault weapons. It was tough. The gun lobby is powerful. But we forged a political consensus to get it done because the American people demanded it. Earlier this month, President Obama laid out commonsense steps we can take to improve background checks and keep guns out of the hands of people who should never have them -- steps that even the vast majority of gun owners think are sensible and reasonable. But like we've seen before, the special interests are doing everything they can to stop it. But we can't let them. So here's what I'm asking you to do today -- add your name next to mine to show Barack that you've got his back: http://my.democrats.org/Reduce-Gun-Violence We've got a really big year ahead of us, and a lot of work left to do. But with your support, I know we can do the right things to keep our communities safe. Thanks. Joe | |
