I'm proud to stand with the President - add your name if you are, too

DemocratsJoin us.
President Obama is taking action to stop the epidemic of gun violence in our country. I'm standing with him -- if you are, too, add your name right now.

Friend --

Every year, more than 30,000 American lives are cut short by guns. That means hundreds of thousands of American families have had their lives changed forever -- losing loved ones, neighbors, co-workers, friends. Five years ago, my life was touched when my colleague and dear friend, Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, was shot by a deranged gunman and left with a severe brain injury. Six others died -- including one of her Congressional staff members, a federal district court judge, and a nine-year-old girl.

In the years since, Congress has passed exactly zero new measures to try to prevent such senseless tragedies and protect Americans from gun violence. I've watched in disbelief as the most commonsense measures with wide margins of support have been opposed by extreme Republican leaders who are too afraid to stand up to the gun lobby.

But President Obama is taking a stand. On Tuesday morning and again in last night's town hall, he laid out a plan for a responsible and necessary course of action to use every tool at his disposal to curb the epidemic of gun violence in this country.

This simply should not be a partisan issue, but Republicans -- including their leading presidential candidates -- remain steadfast in their opposition to any measures that would prevent gun violence. There are ways to make our country safe while respecting the Second Amendment, but the Republican Party has shown nothing but political cowardice in the face of the NRA.

So add your name to stand with President Obama and Democrats who have had enough and are ready to take action:

We are going to do whatever it takes to keep Americans safe, and President Obama's actions are a crucial step in leading the way on commonsense reform. I hope you're as proud as I am to stand with him today and every day.
