Friend -- On January 8th, 2011, my friend, Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, was shot at a constituent event outside a supermarket in Tucson, Arizona. Armed with a semi-automatic pistol and high-capacity magazines, the shooter killed six people and injured more than a dozen, including Gabby, before his rampage was stopped. Nearly five years have gone by, and our nation has suffered hundreds of mass shootings since. In 2015 alone, more than 12,000 Americans have been killed by guns, and thousands more have received that same call that I did -- delivering the horrific news that a friend or neighbor or loved one had been wounded, or killed. Yet, in all that time, we have done nothing to stop the epidemic of gun violence that is plaguing our nation. Enough is enough. It's time for us to take action -- action that the vast majority of Americans, including most law-abiding gun owners, support -- and make some commonsense reforms to our nation's gun laws that will keep guns out of dangerous hands. It may not be easy, and it may require the political courage to stand up to well-funded special interests, but it is the morally right thing to do.
