Two years ago at the Democratic National Convention, I stood proudly alongside my wife Ghazala as a patriotic American Muslim with undivided loyalty to our country. Our story is the story of many immigrants: We came to America with next to nothing and worked hard to provide for our three sons, allowing them to grow up in a country where they were free to follow their dreams. We came here because we believed in American democracy. Right now, our democracy is at risk. We have a president who would rather side with Russia than protect the country he took a sacred oath to serve -- which is why we can't take November's elections lightly, Pat. We have a huge opportunity to put a check on Trump's authority and change our country for the better -- and it starts right now with Tuesday's FEC deadline.

When Trump cut protections for DACA recipients and put immigrant children in cages, I thought of my own experience when I was seven years old, and my mother fled an abusive marriage in Japan and immigrated to Hawaii for the promise of a better life for her children. When Trump instituted his Muslim ban, I fought to protect our Muslim brothers and sisters from the president's discriminatory treatment. When Trump tried to repeal the Affordable Care Act, I fought for the millions of vulnerable Americans who are battling chronic illness and diseases, like me. Democrats protected life-saving health care because we came together and fought back. And now that Trump has nominated another far-right conservative to the Supreme Court, I'm fighting -- again -- for a woman's right to choose what she does with her body. We will not go back to the days when women struggled to access abortion and reproductive health care. Every day I go to work to defend the voices that Donald Trump and his administration want to blot out, and I need you to join me in that fight, Pat.
