The Affordable Care Act

Look. I've asked a lot of folks about why the Affordable Care Act is important to them and gotten a lot of answers. Some are glad they won't have to worry about how they'll pay for their prescriptions, while others are relieved to finally have access to health insurance after years of being denied for a previous condition. Health care is a personal thing, and an important thing -- and if we had helped just one person get covered, then I would have been proud of that. So you can only imagine how pleased I am that more than 16 million Americans have gained coverage in the five years since I watched President Obama sign the Affordable Care Act. I hope you're proud, too, because your support helped make this happen. This is a good day

Five years ago today, I signed the Affordable Care Act into law. That was a pretty good day, but I've got to say -- this one is even better. Because now we don't just have plans and hopes for the future, we have five years of facts -- and the facts say indisputably that health care reform is working. All across America, folks are seeing that their prescriptions have gotten cheaper. They're seeing that insurance companies can no longer deny them coverage because of a pre-existing condition. And by the end of this year's enrollment period, more than 16 million Americans gained coverage. Meanwhile, Republicans have spent the last five years trying -- and failing -- to repeal health care reform, and they've given no indication that they intend to do anything different for the next five.
