Courage

I owe so much to my mother.

When I was a small child, I once went outside to play, only for the other kids to start pushing me around. I ran back to the house crying, and my mother met me at the door. She said, kindly but firmly, "There is no room for cowards in this house. You go right back out there and stand up for yourself."

I owe so much to my mother, including that formative lesson in courage. I've been thinking about her a lot lately, especially as we celebrate Women's History Month and the hard-fought progress we've made; born just as women won the right to vote, my mother lived long enough to vote for her daughter to be President. That is what's possible in this country when we work together. And that's why I've dedicated my life to fighting for a fairer, more inclusive, democratic America.
