Since we came into office, Vice President Harris and I have supported voting rights legislation. But let me be clear: This is not about me or Vice President Harris or our party. It's about all of us. It's about the people. It's about America. Hear me plainly. The battle for the soul of America is not over.
That's why I'm once again calling for the passage of the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.
You see, Jim Crow 2.0 is about two insidious things: voter suppression and election subversion. It's no longer about who gets to vote -- it's about making it harder to vote, who gets to count the vote, and whether your vote counts at all. And we cannot stand for it.
We must pass the Freedom to Vote Act, which will prevent voter suppression, protect nonpartisan election officials -- folks who are just trying to do their job -- from intimidation and interference, get dark money out of politics, and create fair district maps.
We also must pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, to restore the strength of the Voting Rights Act and give the Justice Department the power to stop discriminatory laws before they even go into effect.
This is the moment to decide to defend our elections and to defend our democracy. And if you do that, I promise you, you will not be alone.
History has never been kind to those who have sided with voter suppression over voting rights. And it will not be kind to those who fail to defend the right to vote. I'm committed as ever to this fight to protect the right to vote, and I'm grateful to have you by my side.
Thank you for being a part of this fight.
Joe
Joseph R. Biden Jr.
President of the United States
