Hurricane Harvey

What we've seen this week:

Pat --

Like many of you, I've been following the news coming out of Texas with a heavy heart this week. The damage and destruction left behind in the wake of Hurricane Harvey is devastating, and my thoughts are with everyone affected.

We've also seen some incredible acts of kindness. From the rescue workers and volunteers who have gone without sleep for days, to Texans of all ages setting out in boats and kayaks to rescue their neighbors, to elected officials on the ground working together to put community ahead of political party, the best of America has shown up in Texas.

The Houston Chronicle has been collecting ways to help -- it's easier than ever to click and donate (I just did!).

Our friends and neighbors in Texas are counting on us, and I know we won't let them down.

Thank you,

Hillary

awful

Last night was awful, Pat. But it doesn't have to be this way.

We can have leaders who will unite us instead of embracing the hatred that drives us apart.

We can have a president who shares our American values and respects the institutions that make this country great, and not one who undermines our First Amendment freedoms at every turn.

We can invest in growing our economy, creating good-paying jobs, and guaranteeing health care as a right, or we can build a wall that is rooted in hatred and fear-mongering.

We can secure a future for this country that we know is right. But we must elect more Democrats.

We need to start this November by electing Democratic governors and legislators in Virginia and New Jersey, and take back the Washington state senate. We need to break the Republican majorities in Congress next year. And in 2020, we need to put a Democrat in the White House. We need more Democrats in office from top to bottom, in every state.

But we can't do it without you. So if you've had enough of what we saw last night, then chip in $10 or more to make sure Democrats can win at every level.

No matter what Trump says or does tonight...

Rise and organize.
DemocratsJoin us.
Commit today to rise above Donald Trump's hatred and organize to defeat him:

Pat --

It's great to be back home in Arizona, but I wish I could say I was here under happier circumstances.

In the middle of one of the most disturbing periods of his administration so far, Donald Trump is holding a campaign rally. I'm here today to fight back.

Whenever criticism of Donald Trump has reached a fever pitch this year, he's turned to his most divisive policies. Tonight's rally is no different.

But let's be clear-eyed about why so many of us have spoken out against Donald Trump this week.

Donald Trump empowered the white supremacist groups who committed an act of domestic terrorism. He compared Nazis and the KKK to the peaceful protestors who opposed them. He described those who angrily marched on Charlottesville with torches, making Nazi salutes and chanting "Jews will not replace us," as "very fine people."

So if Donald Trump is at his most divisive tonight, if he again calls for a wall that is premised on prejudice and fear-mongering, I'll be here with all those who are speaking out against Trump's empowerment of hate and division. We'll make sure he knows that we will fight racism and reject the bigotry he has enabled.

If you're with us, add your name and say so today:

Thanks,

Jess

a note on Onward Together

I can't do any of this without you.

Pat --

First of all, thank you. To have your support in this next venture means so much to me. Onward Together is the true culmination of a great deal of thinking and listening over the last few months, and I'm excited to continue sharing our work with you.

It's been amazing to watch what the groups Onward Together is uplifting have been up to -- from recruiting thousands of young people to run for office to organizing at town halls across the country. I wanted to make sure you knew all the good they were doing, so I'll be passing on updates every once in a while. (See the first one about Indivisible below.)

The last few weeks have been a whirlwind of traveling, seeing family, and making edits to my next book, which is my most personal yet. It's a book about what happened in the 2016 election, what we can learn from it, and what we can all do now. But even more than that, it's a book about resilience -- about getting knocked down and getting back up. I can't wait for you to be able to read it in September, and I look forward to seeing many of you across the country this fall.

I also had the a chance to see Wonder Woman finally, and it was just as inspirational as I'd suspected a movie about a strong, powerful woman in a fight to save the world from international disaster would be.

I hope you're all enjoying your summers, and that you get a chance to relax with the people you love. Thank you, again, for your continued support. I can't do any of this work without you. This team is one I'll always be proud to be a part of -- I hope you will, too.

Onward!

Hillary

Onward Together works to build a brighter future for generations to come by supporting groups that encourage people to organize in their communities or run for office. The organization: Indivisible

The organizers: Leah Greenberg, former staffer for Representative Tom Perriello of Virginia, and her husband Ezra Levin, former staffer for Representative Lloyd Doggett of Texas.

The mission: To fuel a progressive grassroots network to defeat the Trump agenda by holding each and every member of Congress accountable to their constituents.

The story: Leah and Ezra came up with the Indivisible Guide to affecting change in Congress over drinks with friends a few weeks after the 2016 election. They put their initial 23-page google doc online, and it blew up -- it's now been downloaded more than 2 million times and inspired more than 5,800 local Indivisible chapters across the country, including at least two in each congressional district.

The latest: Indivisible is financially independent, but they're great friends to the progressive movement. Together with organizations like Planned Parenthood, Indivisible had led the charge in directing thousands of people to town hall meetings across the country and hundreds of thousands of calls to members of Congress -- so much so that they have been credited as a force in the fight that led to the defeat of the Republicans' repeal of the Affordable Care Act.

The next step: Republican leadership may not be letting up in their attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act, but Indivisible isn't letting up, either.

Pat --

As I've reflected on what happened in Charlottesville, I've been struck by the symbols that have been embraced by these white supremacists -- the flags of the Confederacy and of Nazi Germany -- and what it looks like to the men and women who serve our country today.

When we teach the history of the Civil War in my home state, we talk about the 1st Minnesota Volunteer Infantry. Eighty percent of the regiment gave their lives at Gettysburg -- where on the other side of the battle line stood Robert E. Lee and that Confederate flag.

During World War II, my grandfather trained black soldiers to fix airplanes and my father joined the Army at the age of 15. The enemy they fought against had that same swastika on their uniforms.

I cannot imagine what it must mean for the brave members of our military who wear our flag to see their Commander-in-Chief embrace those who would rally their hatred behind the symbols of America's enemies. They deserve to have a leader who is guided by the principles of our Constitution and a moral compass that is in tune with our American values.

That will never happen as long as Donald Trump continues to surround himself with bigots, white nationalists, and enablers of white supremacy. They work in the White House, and they sit with Trump in the Oval Office.

Steve Bannon was just the beginning -- they all must go. Join us as we call on Trump to rid himself of the white supremacists in his midst:

Every white supremacist must go (add your name)

Racism has no home in the White House.
DemocratsJoin us.
Tell Trump to fire Seb Gorka, Stephen Miller, and every white supremacist in his administration.

Pat --

I don't think it's unreasonable to expect that the most hateful elements of our society won't have a voice at the highest levels of government.

But the fact is that even with Steve Bannon gone, Donald Trump's inner circle still includes prominent white nationalists and enablers of white supremacy.

Seb Gorka, one of Trump's top aides, is a member of a Hungarian Nazi organization. Senior advisor Stephen Miller is a devotee of Richard Spencer, a leader of the so-called alt-right who cheered on Trump's disgraceful response to the events in Charlottesville.

These men are so far below anyone who should be serving in government, and it's beyond disturbing they continue to have the ear of the President of the United States. And as long as they remain among his closest advisors, Trump can never truly reject the hatred that they perpetuate.

Tens of thousands of Democrats signed on to call on Trump to fire Bannon in the past few days -- and yesterday we were successful. Now, we are calling on Donald Trump to fire Gorka, Miller, and anyone else with ties to white supremacy in his administration -- today.

Every white supremacist must go (add your name)

Racism has no home in the White House.
DemocratsJoin us.
Tell Trump to fire Seb Gorka, Stephen Miller, and every white supremacist in his administration.

Pat --

When Donald Trump finally brought himself to speak out on the terrible events in Charlottesville this past weekend, he didn't condemn hatred or white supremacy or people who marched wearing swastikas on their arms. He blamed "many sides."

And as he's continued to address the nation in the days that have followed, he's made it clear that he accepts the support of the violent, white supremacist mob because he thinks it will help him politically. I wish I could say I was surprised.

One of my favorite poets, Maya Angelou, once said: "When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time." Donald Trump started his campaign with hate, and we knew his presidency would be no different after he surrounded himself with men -- like Steve Bannon, Seb Gorka, and Stephen Miller -- who have given these vile groups platforms to speak on.

He showed us who he was and what he stood for the first time.

So if Donald Trump can ever truly reject hate, he needs to start by removing the enablers of white supremacy from his administration. Firing Steve Bannon -- as thousands of us called for -- is a start, but he needs to do more.

Words alone are not enough. Tell Donald Trump to take action against hate:

Thank you,

Keith
