Friend --

Today, we send too many Americans -- disproportionately African Americans and Latino Americans -- from underfunded school systems and communities of limited resources to overcrowded jails. But that can change. Right now, we have a real opportunity in front of us to reform the prison system in our country and enhance public safety.

It starts with how we treat nonviolent offenders in the first place. I've had the chance to meet with some of these inmates, every single one of whom emphasized that they understood they had done something wrong and were prepared to take responsibility for their actions. They all expressed huge appreciation for the educational opportunities and drug counseling they've had -- but they also expressed some fear and concern about how difficult their reentry into society was going to be.

So we can re-work and increase the effectiveness of drug rehabilitation centers, treatment facilities, and training programs. And when people do serve time, we can do more to ensure that they aren't chained down to past mistakes because they're unsupported in their efforts to reintegrate into society or can't find an employer willing to hire them.

These changes need to be made -- and sooner rather than later. So add your name to help elect Democrats who will work hard to reform our criminal justice system.

The United States accounts for five percent of the world's total population, but 25 percent of the world's incarcerated population. And every single year, we spend $80 billion in taxpayer dollars to fund those incarcerations. These numbers aren't just startling, they are unnecessary. We've got to promote rehabilitation over punitive action: It's better for our communities and smarter for the economy.

We must stop painting criminal records with such large brushstrokes. And we must make sure that once they have paid their debt to society, we are providing our fellow Americans with a fair shot to get their lives on track.
