A historic moment

pacquiao --

Although it's Christmas Eve, I wanted to share some exciting news: The Senate just passed a historic health reform bill.

In all the back and forth, it's easy to lose sight of what this incredible breakthrough really means. But consider this: This Christmas, there are millions of Americans without health insurance who risk losing everything if they get sick.

There are mothers and fathers who wonder how they'll provide for their children because an illness has wiped out their savings. There are small business owners who worry that they'll have to lay off a long-time employee because the cost of insurance is rapidly rising.

If we finish the job, all this can change. We will have beaten back the special interests who have for so long perpetuated the status quo. We will have enacted the most important piece of social policy since the Social Security Act in the 1930s, and the most important health reform since Medicare in the 1960s.

In Decembers to come, millions more will have access to affordable coverage. Parents will have the security and stability of knowing their insurance can't be revoked at a moment's notice. And the skyrocketing costs plaguing our small businesses will be brought under control.

When you make calls, write letters, organize, this is the change you're making -- a better life for your family and for men and women in every state.

There is still more to do before I can sign reform into law -- a last round of negotiations and final votes in the Senate and the House -- and I'm counting on your help every step of the way. But for now, I hope that as you celebrate this holiday season, you remember that the work you are doing is making our union more perfect, one step at a time. For that, I am grateful to you.

Merry Christmas and happy holidays,

President Barack Obama

P.S. -- Supporters of reform are signing a note of appreciation to all the senators who have worked so hard to make this possible. I hope you'll join them:

Where we stand

pacquiao --

Early this morning, the Senate made history and health reform cleared its most important hurdle yet -- garnering the 60 votes needed to move toward a final vote in that chamber later this week.

This marks the first time in our nation's history that comprehensive health reform has come to this point. And it appears that the American people will soon realize the genuine reform that offers security to those who have health insurance and affordable options to those who do not.

I'm grateful to Senator Harry Reid and every senator who's been working around the clock to make this happen. And I'm grateful to you, and every member of this community, for all the work you have done to make this progress possible.

After a nearly century-long struggle, we are now on the cusp of making health insurance reform a reality in the United States of America.

As with any legislation, compromise is part of the process. But I'm pleased that recently added provisions have made this landmark bill even stronger. Between the time when the bill passes and the time when the insurance exchanges get up and running, insurance companies that try to jack up their rates do so at their own peril. Those who hike their prices may be barred from selling plans on the exchanges.

And while insurance companies will be prevented from denying coverage on the basis of pre-existing conditions once the exchanges are open, in the meantime there will be a high-risk pool where people with pre-existing conditions can purchase affordable coverage.

A recent amendment has made these protections even stronger. Insurance companies will now be prohibited from denying coverage to children immediately after this bill passes. There's also explicit language in this bill that will protect a patient's choice of doctor. And small businesses will get additional assistance as well.

These protections are in addition to the ones we've been talking about for some time. No longer will insurance companies be able to drop your coverage if you become sick and no longer will you have to pay unlimited amounts out of your own pocket for treatments that you need.

Under this bill families will save on their premiums; businesses that would see their costs rise if we don't act will save money now and in the future. This bill will strengthen Medicare and extend the life of the program. Because it's paid for and gets rid of waste and inefficiency in our health care system, this will be the largest deficit reduction plan in over a decade.

Finally, this reform will extend coverage to more than 30 million Americans who don't have it.

These are not small changes. These are big changes. They're fundamental reforms. They will save money. They will save lives.

And your passion, your work, your organizing helped make all of this possible. Now it's time to finish the job.

Thank you,

President Barack Obama

Fwd: One million calls

pacquiao --

We've been fighting for health reform for decades. Now it's within reach.

Democratic senators across the country are currently fighting hard alongside the President to pass reform. They deserve our appreciation. Others are still trying to score partisan points rather than stand up for American families -- and they need to understand that their constituents demand better.

Please read the email below and help us hit one million calls to Congress since August in support of reform today.

Thanks,

Jen

Subject: One million calls

Friend --

If we don't pass health reform, millions of Americans will be trapped in a broken status quo, unable to pay their bills or see a doctor when they need one.

More and more employers will drop coverage for employees. And Medicare and Medicaid will blow a hole through our budget.

There's too much at stake not to get this done. That's why OFA supporters have made 849,856 calls to Congress in support of health reform since August.

And that's why today, with the Senate locked in last-minute negotiations, our goal is to hit one million calls.

Can you help? Click here to call your senators now and help us "ring in reform."

Ring in Reform: Call Now

This holiday season, millions of Americans will go without desperately-needed care simply because they can't afford insurance.

But insurance lobbyists are desperate to pull apart the bill and derail reform, so your voice is needed now.

Many senators are already working hard for reform, and they deserve our thanks. The rest urgently need to hear that their constituents are counting on them to stand up for change.

Just dial the numbers above, then tell the staffers who answer where you live -- so that they know you are a constituent -- and that you support reform.

Then click here to make sure you call is counted in the race to a million:

Medicare and Mr. McCain

The Democratic Party
pacquiao --

Last week, Senator John McCain took to the floor of the Senate to falsely claim that Medicare savings in health reform would cause seniors to lose their access to health care.

Sadly for Mr. McCain, AARP -- the country's largest seniors advocacy organization -- says no reform proposal on the table would cut guaranteed benefits for seniors.

We bet McCain's constituents will want to know that he's twisting the truth to block health reform -- reform that would help Arizona businesses and families.

Call 'em Out: John McCain. Donate now to help us run online ads in Arizona calling Senator McCain out.

Call out Senator John McCain

McCain isn't just making incorrect claims about reform.

He offered an amendment to Senate legislation that independent Medicare consumer groups said would keep the Medicare trust fund on its current path to bankruptcy.

Reform would strengthen Medicare, cut waste, and put it on firm financial footing for the future. But McCain's amendment would have eliminated reforms, weakened Medicare, and delayed the overall bill.

We need your help to make sure Arizonans know what McCain is willing to do and say to block desperately-needed reform.

Our ads will put the truth in front of tens of thousands of his constituents -- but we need your help to get them up and running:

We will not back down

pacquiao --

As we head into the final stretch on health reform, big insurance company lobbyists and their partisan allies hope that their relentless attacks and millions of dollars can intimidate us into accepting the status quo.

So I have a message for them, from all of us: Not this time. We have come too far. We will not turn back. We will not back down.

But do not doubt -- the opponents of reform will not rest. So I need you to fight alongside me.

We must continue to build out our campaign -- to spread the facts on the air and on the ground, and to bring in more volunteers and train them to join the fight. I urgently need your help to keep this 50-state movement for reform going strong.

Afghanistan

pacquiao --

Last night, President Obama laid out his plan to defend our national interest by refocusing our efforts on three clear goals: defeating al Qaeda, stabilizing Pakistan, and breaking the Taliban's momentum in Afghanistan.

To achieve these goals, the President has authorized the rapid deployment of 30,000 more troops in Afghanistan, with a firm commitment to begin bringing our troops home in 2011.

It's a clean break from the failed Afghanistan policy of the Bush administration, and a new, focused strategy that can succeed.

Please take a moment to watch the President's address to the nation and read more about his plan.

Watch the address

Our new strategy ends the era of blank checks for Afghanistan's leaders, facilitates a responsible transition to Afghan security forces, and begins bringing our troops home in 2011.

Please take a moment to listen to President Obama outline his plan -- and pass this along to anyone you know who wants to learn more:

Thanksgiving

pacquiao --

Tomorrow, Thanksgiving Day, Americans across the country will sit down together, count our blessings, and give thanks for our families and our loved ones.

American families reflect the diversity of this great nation. No two are exactly alike, but there is a common thread they each share.

Our families are bound together through times of joy and times of grief. They shape us, support us, instill the values that guide us as individuals, and make possible all that we achieve.

So tomorrow, I'll be giving thanks for my family -- for all the wisdom, support, and love they have brought into my life.

But tomorrow is also a day to remember those who cannot sit down to break bread with those they love.

The soldier overseas holding down a lonely post and missing his kids. The sailor who left her home to serve a higher calling. The folks who must spend tomorrow apart from their families to work a second job, so they can keep food on the table or send a child to school.

We are grateful beyond words for the service and hard work of so many Americans who make our country great through their sacrifice. And this year, we know that far too many face a daily struggle that puts the comfort and security we all deserve painfully out of reach.

So when we gather tomorrow, let us also use the occasion to renew our commitment to building a more peaceful and prosperous future that every American family can enjoy.

It seems like a lifetime ago that a crowd met on a frigid February morning in Springfield, Illinois to set out on an improbable course to change our nation.

In the years since, Michelle and I have been blessed with the support and friendship of the millions of Americans who have come together to form this ongoing movement for change.

You have been there through victories and setbacks. You have given of yourselves beyond measure. You have enabled all that we have accomplished -- and you have had the courage to dream yet bigger dreams for what we can still achieve.

So in this season of thanks giving, I want to take a moment to express my gratitude to you, and my anticipation of the brighter future we are creating together.

With warmest wishes for a happy holiday season from my family to yours,

President Barack Obama

Sarah Palin

The Democratic Party
pacquiao --

Right now, Sarah Palin is on a highly publicized, nationwide book tour, attacking President Obama and his plan for health reform at every turn.

It's dangerous. Remember, this is the person who coined the term "Death Panels" -- and opened the flood gates for months of false attacks by special interests and partisan extremists.

Whatever lie comes next will be widely covered by the media, then constantly echoed by right-wing attack groups and others who are trying to defeat reform.

As we approach the final sprint on health reform, we can't afford more deception and delay. We need to be ready for anything -- and have the resources to respond with ads, events, and calls to Congress when the attacks come.

So we're setting a big goal: $500,000 in the next week to help push back against Sarah Palin and her allies. Please chip in $5 or more to help reach our goal.

Please donate

Earlier this month, Palin publicly said that she hopes health reform will be "dead on arrival." And since then, she's been working fiercely toward that goal.

On Tuesday, Palin went on Rush Limbaugh's radio show where she outrageously -- and falsely -- suggested that Americans could "face jail time as punishment" if they don't buy insurance.

Palin has many more interviews scheduled on Hannity and other conservative shows in the next few weeks, with more platforms to go after the President. As soon as she does, the rest of our opponents will likely parrot those attacks.

We need to be prepared. And we're counting on you help. Can you chip in $5 or more?

Delay and distort

The Democratic Party
pacquiao --

Our nation has been talking about comprehensive health insurance reform for nearly a century. And this time around, Congress has been debating it for almost 10 months.

But last Sunday, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said the whole process is just going too fast. He showed what's long been obvious: His strategy is to bury reform under endless delays and distortions.

McConnell seems willing to use every trick in the book to delay a fair debate on reform. Each day reform is postponed is another day for him to attack it with another distortion. It's a desperate gambit to confuse the American people, derail the effort in Congress, and block reform.

Mitch McConnell: We're calling you out.

Call 'em Out: Mitch McConnell. Watch the video -- then call McConnell's office and tell him to quit delaying reform.

Call out GOP Representatives

McConnell claimed that health reform would cut Medicare. AARP says it isn't true -- and endorsed the bill in the House.

He trotted out the old "reform will drive insurers out of business" line. But the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office concluded that most people would still be covered by private health insurance.

And the one about reform forcing bureaucrats between doctors and patients? His predecessor as the Senate Republican leader, Bill Frist, recently said, "that's not what's in these bills."

We put together a video debunking all of McConnell's distortions -- watch and share it today. Then call McConnell's office and make sure he knows Americans won't sit idly by while he delays desperately needed reform.

12 hours of health reform lies

The Democratic Party
pacquiao --

Last Saturday night, at 11:15 p.m., the House of Representatives passed the Affordable Health Care for America Act -- becoming the first house of Congress to pass comprehensive health reform in American history.

For the preceding 12 hours, Republican representatives stood on the House floor and spouted callous and shameless lie after lie in a desperate, last-ditch effort to stop reform. Perhaps they thought that if enough of them lied enough times in a row, they could get away with it. They were wrong.

Watch our video showing all of the outrageous lies from the House debate -- and debunking each one.

Call out GOP Representatives

A healthy, honest debate on the floor of Congress is essential to passing good laws -- but that's not what these Republicans showed up to do on Saturday night. We can't give up on the truth, so we're keeping President Obama's promise to call out those who cease debating on the merits and start lying about reform -- even when there are almost too many lies to count.

Health reform will have to pass the House once more before President Obama can sign it. So it's essential that we debunk this misinformation now so that swing members in Congress can sort out fact from fiction -- and so that those who would lie again know they will be held to account.

Check out the video, then use our "Call 'em Out" Twitter tool to tell the House G.O.P. what you think of their string of lies:

A huge step

The Democratic Party
pacquiao --

We did it. With House passage of health reform last weekend, we took a huge step toward providing affordable options to those without insurance, providing greater security for those who are already covered, and reducing costs for families and small businesses.

There have been many attempts in the last nearly 100 years, but Saturday's vote was the first time a chamber of Congress succeeded in passing comprehensive health reform. As President Obama wrote after the vote, "This is history."

But now we need to keep the pressure on -- and one of the best ways to show our support is to fill local newspapers across the country with letters about why we need reform now.

Take a few minutes to write a letter to the editor in support of health reform.
Write a letter

Your letter can tell a personal story about why health reform matters to you and your family, or explain how important it is that our representatives stand with their constituents and not the special interests.

After the House vote, there are three big steps left, and it's going to be a fight the whole way. Soon, the Senate will vote on its version of the bill, then there will be a round of negotiations to combine the two versions, and finally, each chamber will take a final vote.

It's going to be an uphill battle, but my experiences as governor have taught me that moments like this weekend's vote serve to motivate and spark action. When one chamber takes the first step, it encourages the other to quickly follow suit.

This is among the most critical issues facing our country today. I'm sure that years from now, we'll all look back on this as one of the most important fights of our life.

Let's make sure we give everything we can to keep the pressure on and win this thing:

Making history

pacquiao --

This evening, at 11:15 p.m., the House of Representatives voted to pass their health insurance reform bill. Despite countless attempts over nearly a century, no chamber of Congress has ever before passed comprehensive health reform. This is history.

But you and millions of your fellow supporters didn't just witness history tonight -- you helped make it. Each "yes" vote was a brave stand, backed up by countless hours of knocking on doors, outreach in town halls and town squares, millions of signatures, and hundreds of thousands of calls. You stood up. You spoke up. And you were heard.

So this is a night to celebrate -- but not to rest. Those who voted for reform deserve our thanks, and the next phase of this fight has already begun.

The final Senate bill hasn't even been released yet, but the insurance companies are already pressing hard for a filibuster to bury it. The Democratic Party and Organizing for America have built a massive neighborhood-by-neighborhood operation to bring people's voices to Congress, and tonight we saw the results. But the coming days will put our efforts to the ultimate test. Winning will require each of us to give everything we can, starting right now.

Please donate $5 or whatever you can afford so we can finish this fight.

Tonight's vote brought every American closer to the secure, affordable care we need. But it was also a watershed moment in how change is made.

Even after last year's election, many insider lobbyists and partisan operatives really thought that the old formula of scare tactics, D.C. back-scratching and special-interest money would still be enough to block any idea they didn't like. Now, they're desperate. Because, tonight, you made it crystal clear: the old rules are changing -- and the people will not be ignored.

In the final phases of last year's election, I often reminded folks, "Don't think for a minute that power concedes without a fight," and it's especially true today. But that's okay -- we're not afraid of a fight. And as you continue to prove, when all of us work together, we have what it takes to win.

Please donate to OFA's campaign to win this fight and ensure that real health reform reaches my desk by the end of this year:

The "Health Insurance Company Protection Act"

The Democratic Party
pacquiao --

The House Republicans just released their version of health reform. It's a disaster -- so outrageous that Democratic Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz has dubbed it the "Health Insurance Company Protection Act" -- but Republicans are arguing it's the key to real reform.

So we're pushing back hard, with the top 5 reasons that the GOP bill fails America. Take a look at the list -- then pass it along to all your friends who need to know the facts.
  • The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) says it would barely make a dent in most of our premiums, and could lead to higher premiums for older Americans.
  • The New York Times reports that it doesn't stop insurers from refusing to cover you because of a pre-existing condition.
  • The CBO's research shows that the GOP plan would likely cut the deficit by just $68 billion over the next ten years -- far less than the Democratic bill, which cuts the deficit by $104 billion over the same period.
  • The CBO also estimates that under the Republican bill the number of uninsured Americans would actually increase to 52 million by 2019.
  • And Politico writes that the Republican's so-called plan doesn't keep insurers from dropping you when you're sick -- it just makes them let you know that you're being dropped.
The Democratic bill in the House is what America actually needs. It stops insurance companies from refusing coverage because of a pre-existing condition. It prevents them from denying you care when you get sick. It will help lower premiums for our families and businesses, and will cover 33 million more people than the Republican bill.

Capitol Hill newspapers are reporting that the House may vote on a Democratic bill tomorrow. So it's especially crucial that we get the word out immediately. Please pass this along to everyone you know.

Sarah Palin's Facebook lies

The Democratic Party
pacquiao --

A lot of folks use Facebook to stay in touch with friends and family. For Sarah Palin, it's a great way to spread lies about health insurance reform.

A few months back, Palin took to Facebook to declare that health reform would create "death panels," and drive private insurers out of business -- and nonpartisan fact-check sites and the independent Congressional Budget Office debunked those lies.

But that hasn't stopped Sarah Palin. She's back with a new Facebook note claiming that reform will raise costs on families and drive up deficits. Unfortunately for her, even the conservative "Tax Foundation" says those claims are false.

So we're calling out Sarah Palin, and taking to Facebook to debunk her lies on the very same pages she's using to spread them.

Call 'em out: Sarah Palin. Watch the video, make a call, spread the word on Facebook.

Call out Sarah Palin

We've put together a short Facebook note cataloging just some of Sarah Palin's many distortions and the facts that prove her wrong. But we need your help to "share" the note and make sure she doesn't get away with her outrageous lies.

If Sarah Palin wants to spread lies on Facebook, we'll call her out in the very same place. And when thousands of folks share our note and expose her lies, it will be clear that those who lie about reform will be held accountable -- no matter where they spread their misinformation.

The more we push back with the truth, the more Sarah Palin and others like her will have to think twice before they promote lies, and the less they'll be able to derail progress.

Even if you don't have a Facebook account, you can still help us call out Sarah Palin. Visit Call 'em Out: Sarah Palin to watch our video detailing her lies and to call Palin's political organization and say, "stop lying."

Rising health care costs are crushing American families and squeezing small businesses. Reform will reign in costs and cut the deficit in the long run -- that's why it's so important, and why Sarah Palin's lies are so malicious.

We're not letting it stand. We're calling Sarah Palin out:

Michael Steele's political games

The Democratic Party
pacquiao --

Last weekend, Republican Rep. Dana Rohrabacher admitted what's been painfully clear for months, saying: "I see a lot of Republicans simply involved in political games."

Sadly, he's right -- and when it comes to health reform, there's no one that statement applies to more than Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele. Instead of encouraging his party to work toward reform, Steele's been leading the charge against it with a series of lies and distortions.

He's claimed reform would hurt small businesses, cost millions of Americans their insurance, and cut Medicare benefits -- and independent observers have declared each of those claims false.

Steele knows that all Americans -- Republicans and Democrats alike -- are dealing with the painful consequences of a broken health care system. But he's siding with Washington elites and insurance companies and playing political games to kill reform -- so we're calling him out.

Call 'em Out: Michael Steele. Watch the video, spread the word, make a call.
Call out Michael Steele

Even though everyone from Sanjay Gupta to AARP and the independent PolitiFact say that claims that reform would cut Medicare benefits or result in rationing are false, Steele's been spreading them for months.

And what does the Congressional Budget Office -- the independent arm of Congress that evaluates bills -- think about Steele's claims that reform would increase the deficit and force Americans from their current coverage? CBO analyses refute the RNC chairman's claims on both counts.

To top it all off, Michael Steele has claimed that reform would burden small businesses and kill jobs. But the conservative Chamber of Commerce admits business owners support reform, and one small business owner said such a claim is "little more than a purposefully misleading bag of rhetoric that has nothing to do with the real issues facing small businesses."

Michael Steele is willing to lie and play political games in order to kill reform that would help Americans of every political party -- so we're calling him out:

Fwd: 100,000 calls to Congress

The Democratic Party
pacquiao --

While millions of Americans deal with the painful consequences of our broken health care system, the insurance lobby is spending millions to try to delay and kill health reform.

So we need to speak up, drown out the lobbyists, and send a message to Congress: It's time to deliver on health reform.

Read the email below from Organizing for America director Mitch Stewart, and then help us generate 100,000 calls to Congress by calling your representatives today:

http://www.democrats.org/TTDCall

Thanks,

Jen

Subject: 100,000 calls to Congress

Friend --

Jenny U. from Missouri did what any parent would: When her son needed a kidney, she donated one of hers. But she didn't realize insurance companies would use her kindness as an excuse to never cover her again, calling her donation a "pre-existing condition."

Now, insurance companies are spending millions on a campaign of lies to kill health reform that would help folks like Jenny. So, today, with crucial negotiations taking place in Congress, we're raising our voices and making it clear: It's time to deliver on reform.

We've set a big goal: 100,000 calls to Congress made or committed to in a single day. To hit it, we'll need your help -- will you take 3 minutes to call Congress now?

Call your representatives and tell them: It's Time to Deliver on health reform.
Call Congress

Health insurance reform is finally ready for consideration by the full Congress, and hundreds of insurance company lobbyists on Capitol Hill are working overtime to kill it. Calling is quick and easy, but effective -- and your voice has tremendous power at this critical moment.

After you make your call, tell the staffer who picks up where you live and that you're counting on Congress to deliver on health reform. Let them know that Americans like you support the President's plan -- and that if your representatives are working to pass it, they have your thanks.

If we hit 100,000 calls made or committed to, we'll send an unmistakable signal that this time, families must come before insurance companies. We'll be tracking progress toward our goal publicly -- make sure to report your call back to us so we can count it:

Mitch

The insurance lobby's lies

The Democratic Party
pacquiao --

After fighting health reform with lies, deceit, and multi-million dollar ad campaigns, the health insurance lobby -- America's Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) -- recently released a report on the "effects of health reform." Surprise! It's full of flawed claims that reform would increase costs.

Many journalists and experts called the report "deceptive" and "implausible." Even the firm that wrote it now admits they only looked at parts of the health reform plan -- because that's what the insurance lobby paid them to do. It's exactly what we should expect from an industry that's been fighting tooth and nail to kill reform, and is now preparing an all-out assault.

We're not going to take it sitting down. So this week, we're calling out the health insurance lobby.

The lobby has invested millions trying to convince Congress to oppose reform. So this week, we're not simply debunking lies: The best way to Call 'em Out is to cut through the spin and tell our representatives to say "no" to deceitful lobbyists and "yes" to reform.

Call 'em Out: Health Insurance Lobby. Send a message urging Congress to stand with voters, not lobbyists.

Call out health insurance lobbyists

This isn't the first time the health insurance lobby has lied, cheated, or used misleading reports. This false report is just the latest salvo in a multi-million dollar offensive that appears designed to frighten voters and bully Congress into opposing reform.

In fact, just days after releasing the report, the lobby announced they will spend a million dollars on a television ad filled with debunked claims of Medicare cuts that could scare seniors away from supporting health reform.

We need your help to call out the insurance lobby and make sure our representatives understand that we're counting on them to stand strong against their pressure.

Visit Call 'em Out: Health Insurance Lobby, and help fight back. Share a video debunking the health insurance lobby's lies with your friends. Spread the word about their deceit on Facebook and Twitter. And most importantly, tell your members of Congress to say "no" to insurance lobby pressure.

Soon, health reform will be taken up by the entire House and Senate, and the insurance lobby will take their attacks to a new level. Their lies will grow more extreme -- and it will be more important than ever that our voices are louder than those of the Washington lobbyists.

Call out the health insurance lobby today:
